Why My Memberships Aren't Like a Spa Chain

Most people have been burned by a membership at some point. The gym you stopped going to but kept paying for. The spa package with sessions that expired before you could use them. The "easy cancellation" that turned out to require a phone call, a form, and three reminders.

I know that is the model people picture when they hear the word membership. I want to be clear: that is not what I do here.

Memberships at Firm and Flourish are built around a simple idea. You committed to your body. I committed to you. The structure should reflect that, not work against it.

I wrote separately about why I moved from packages to a membership model. This post is about what those memberships actually look like in practice.

Here is what that actually looks like.

Members come first when scheduling

I hold slots for my members that are not visible on the public online booking calendar. When a member reaches out, I have time available that other clients do not see. That is the whole point of being a member. Your spot in my week is protected before anyone else's.

I also prioritize members when scheduling rebooks, last-minute openings, and recovery sessions after surgery or a flare-up. If you need to get in, I will make it work.

And I am proactive about it. When your card is charged for the month, I reach out to get your sessions on the book so they actually happen, rather than leaving it to you to remember. If I see a week filling up and you do not have your appointment yet, I will contact you and make sure you get your spot before it is gone. Your scheduling is something I am paying attention to, not something I leave to chance.

That is the real difference. A gym takes your money and never notices whether you show up. We are working toward something together, whether that is healing after surgery, managing a chronic condition, or simply staying well. Getting you on the table is part of my job, not just yours.

You can cancel any time

No notice period. No fee. No conversation you have to brace yourself for. If a membership stops working for you, send me a message and it ends.

You can pause any time, no charge

Traveling for a month? Recovering from something that contraindicates massage? Going through a busy season at work? Pause it. Resume when you are ready. Nothing forfeited, nothing lost.

Your sessions never expire

If you accrue sessions you have not used yet, they are yours. There is no calendar trick where they vanish at the end of a quarter or a year. That is a tactic chain memberships use to keep revenue and shed obligations. It is not how I want to run a practice.

If you stop coming in, I notice. And I reach out.

This is the part most people do not believe until they see it.

If I see that a member is being charged month after month but is not booking sessions, I will message you. I will ask if everything is okay and if you want to schedule. If I do not hear back, I will pause the membership myself so you stop being charged. Then I will keep checking in until we either get you back on the table or you tell me you are done. Not in a creepy way. In a your-money-is-sitting-there-doing-nothing-and-that-bothers-me way.

I am not the gym. I am not a chain spa. I am one person, and my members are real people I know by name. The whole point of a boutique practice is that nothing about it should feel automated, extractive, or designed to catch you in a billing cycle you forgot about.

Two membership tracks

Flourish is the ongoing wellness track for clients who want regular work, whether that is lymphatic, buccal, prenatal recovery, or general bodywork.

Bloom is the fertility, prenatal, and postpartum track, with monthly, biweekly, and weekly options for the stages where consistent work matters most: trying to conceive, pregnancy, and recovery after birth.

Both are run on the same principles laid out above. Whichever fits your life, the structure is the same: cancel any time, pause any time, no expiration, and a real person paying attention.

And if you qualify for Roots

The Roots Program is a flat 15% discount on any service or membership for teachers, healthcare workers, mental health professionals, police, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, social workers, veterans, and veterinary professionals. No application, no income verification, honor system. If you are in one of those fields and want to join Flourish or Bloom, the Roots rate applies to your membership rate too. Just mention it when you reach out.

If you are considering joining, you can see the Flourish and Bloom membership options here or just reach out to talk through which track fits. I would rather have an honest conversation about whether it makes sense for you than enroll you into something that does not.
