Post-Surgical Lymphatic Drainage in Morris County, NJ
Your surgeon did the procedure. Your lymphatic system handles the recovery.
After any surgery, your body does exactly what it's supposed to do: it swells. Blood rushes to the surgical site. Fluid accumulates. Inflammation kicks in. This is healing. But sometimes your lymphatic system, the network responsible for processing and removing all of that excess fluid, can't keep up on its own. That's when swelling lingers, bruising spreads, tissue feels hard, and recovery stalls.
Manual lymphatic drainage helps your body do what it's already trying to do, faster and more efficiently.
How MLD supports post-surgical recovery
Post-surgical lymphatic drainage uses extremely light, precise pressure to move the excess fluid that accumulates after surgery through your lymphatic pathways and into your lymph nodes, where your body can filter and eliminate it.
Reduces swelling. This is the most immediate and visible benefit. Most clients notice a measurable difference in swelling after their first session. For cosmetic procedures where the final result depends on swelling resolution, MLD can significantly improve outcomes and timeline.
Minimizes bruising. By improving circulation and lymphatic flow around the surgical site, MLD helps your body reabsorb bruising more quickly.
Prevents and addresses fibrosis. After procedures like liposuction, tummy tucks, and body contouring, scar tissue and fibrosis can develop under the skin, creating hardness, lumps, and uneven texture. MLD helps prevent this when started early and can address it when it's already developed.
Speeds overall recovery. When your lymphatic system is moving efficiently, every aspect of healing improves: tissue repair, immune function, waste removal, and comfort. Clients who receive regular MLD during their recovery consistently report feeling better faster.
Manages pain and discomfort. Post-surgical tightness, stiffness, and the heavy, water-logged feeling that comes with fluid accumulation can be significantly reduced with MLD.
What procedures benefit from MLD
Essentially any surgery that involves tissue disruption and swelling. The most common procedures I see clients for include:
Cosmetic surgery: Liposuction (including lipo 360), tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast lift, facelift, neck lift, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, mommy makeover procedures.
Reconstructive surgery: Breast reconstruction, skin grafts, scar revision.
Orthopedic surgery: Knee replacement, hip replacement, shoulder surgery, ACL repair, any joint surgery that produces significant swelling.
Abdominal surgery: Hysterectomy, C-section, hernia repair, abdominal procedures.
Dental and maxillofacial surgery: Wisdom tooth extraction, jaw surgery, dental implants. (For jaw-related recovery, buccal massage may also be appropriate.)
If your surgery isn't listed here, reach out. If it involves swelling, MLD can almost certainly help.
When to start
Most clients can begin MLD within a few days of surgery, depending on the procedure and your surgeon's guidance. Some protocols recommend starting as early as 24 to 48 hours post-op. Others recommend waiting 3 to 5 days. I always follow your surgical team's timeline and require physician clearance before we begin.
Bring your surgeon's post-op instructions to your first session if you have them. I'll work within those guidelines and adapt every session to your stage of healing.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies by procedure and by person, but general guidelines:
First two weeks after surgery: 2 to 3 sessions per week is typical for this critical early phase when swelling is most active.
Weeks 2 through 6: 1 to 2 sessions per week as swelling begins to resolve and your body's healing picks up momentum.
After 6 weeks: Weekly or biweekly sessions as needed, depending on how your body is responding.
Some clients need more, some need fewer. Every body heals differently, and I'll give you an honest assessment after your first session. I'm not going to recommend sessions you don't need.
For cosmetic surgery clients, many plastic surgeons recommend 6 to 12 MLD sessions total over the first 4 to 6 weeks. If your surgeon has a specific recommendation, I'll follow it.
Working with your surgeon
I'm happy to coordinate with your surgical team. If your surgeon has specific protocols, restrictions, or preferences, share them with me and I'll follow them. I can also provide your surgeon with updates on your recovery progress if requested.

What to expect at your session
Your first session begins with a conversation about your procedure, your surgery date, your current symptoms, and any instructions from your surgical team. This helps me plan the treatment and identify any areas that need special attention or caution.
The treatment is gentle. Extremely gentle. If you're expecting something like deep tissue massage, this is the opposite. Post-surgical MLD uses feather-light pressure and specific directional movements to encourage fluid drainage without disturbing the healing tissues. It should not be painful. If a practice is doing aggressive "post-op massage" with deep pressure on a healing body, that's not MLD and it's not what we do here.
Sessions are a full 60 minutes of hands-on treatment. I build 30 to 35 minutes between every appointment, so there's no rush arriving or leaving. For post-surgical clients who may be moving slowly, dealing with drains or compression garments, or just not feeling great, that extra buffer time matters.
If you want a deeper understanding of what MLD is and how it works before your first post-surgical session, I explain the full technique in this post about manual lymphatic drainage.
The space
Recovery is hard enough without having to deal with a stressful clinical environment. Firm & Flourish is a private home studio on Round Hill Road in Kinnelon, NJ, surrounded by the woods of the NJ Highlands. There's no waiting room full of strangers. No fluorescent lighting. No hectic scheduling. When you arrive, the space is quiet, clean, and ready for you.
This is a low-volume practice. I see a limited number of clients per day. Every session is with me personally. You won't be handed off to a different therapist each visit, which means your treatment is consistent and I can track your progress session to session.
