Lymphatic Drainage for Fertility, IVF, and Egg Freezing

Your body is doing something extraordinary. Let me support it.

If you're trying to conceive, preparing for IVF, recovering from egg retrieval, or navigating the emotional and physical weight of a fertility journey, manual lymphatic drainage can help your body do what it's trying to do.

This isn't a cure. I won't make promises about outcomes. But I can tell you that your lymphatic system plays a direct role in hormone circulation, immune regulation, inflammation, and pelvic health, and that when it's functioning well, your body has a better foundation for everything that comes next.

How Manual Lymphatic Drainage Supports Fertility

Your lymphatic system is responsible for circulating hormones, filtering waste, managing inflammation, and supporting immune function. When it's sluggish or congested, those processes slow down. That affects everything, including your reproductive system.

MLD uses extremely light, rhythmic pressure to move lymph fluid through your body's natural pathways. For fertility patients, this means:

Hormone regulation. Your lymphatic system is one of the primary transport systems for reproductive hormones. When lymph flow is optimized, hormones circulate more effectively and are processed more efficiently. This is especially important during IVF, when your body is managing high levels of synthetic hormones.

Inflammation reduction. Chronic low-grade inflammation can disrupt ovulation, interfere with implantation, and contribute to conditions like endometriosis and PCOS. MLD helps reduce localized inflammation in the pelvic and abdominal region, supporting a healthier environment for conception.

Detoxification. The medications used in IVF and fertility treatments are powerful. Your body needs to process and eliminate their byproducts efficiently. MLD supports your liver and kidneys by moving lymph fluid toward your lymph nodes, where waste is filtered and removed.

Immune support. Immune disorders and autoimmune conditions can affect your ability to conceive and maintain a pregnancy. A well-functioning lymphatic system supports balanced immune responses, which matters during implantation and early pregnancy.

Swelling and bloating relief. If you've been through egg retrieval or are on hormone injections, you know the bloating, fluid retention, and heaviness that comes with it. MLD can provide significant relief from these symptoms, often noticeably after a single session.

Nervous system regulation. Fertility treatment is stressful. The anxiety, the waiting, the hormones, the appointments. MLD is deeply calming. It activates your parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest mode), which helps your body shift out of the chronic stress state that can interfere with conception.

An Integrative Approach

Manual lymphatic drainage is the foundation of fertility support at Firm & Flourish, but it's not always the only tool I use. Depending on where you are in your cycle and your treatment protocol, I may incorporate:

Specific essential oil blends. Certain essential oils support hormonal balance, reduce stress, and promote circulation to the reproductive organs. I select oils based on your individual needs and where you are in your cycle. These aren't generic "relaxation" blends; they're chosen with intention and adjusted session to session.

Red light therapy. Red and near-infrared light therapy has been shown to support cellular energy production, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation. For fertility patients, this can support tissue health in the pelvic region, improve blood flow to the reproductive organs, and promote an environment that supports conception. I integrate red light therapy into sessions when it's clinically appropriate for your situation.

Castor oil packs. Castor oil packs applied to the abdomen have a long history in naturopathic medicine for supporting pelvic health. They help reduce pelvic inflammation, support lymphatic drainage in the abdominal region, and improve circulation to the uterus and ovaries. Practitioners have used them for decades to help manage symptoms of endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, and painful periods. Research on castor oil has shown it increases T-cell lymphocytes (supporting immune function), and its high concentration of ricinoleic acid gives it significant anti-inflammatory properties. I use these as part of treatment when appropriate, and I can teach you how to use them at home between sessions as part of your self-care routine.

Fertility and hormonal reflexology. This is one of the tools that surprises people the most, and honestly, it's one of the most effective parts of the work. I'm trained in Claire Marie Miller's Integrative Reflexology® and Nurturing the Mother® Fertility Massage methods. Claire is a Massage Hall of Fame inductee who pioneered the connection between reflexology and reproductive health, and her protocols have shown a 60-80% success rate among certified practitioners. Specific reflexology points on the feet correspond to the reproductive organs, the endocrine system, and the pelvic region. By stimulating these points, I can support hormonal regulation, improve circulation to the reproductive organs, and help the body move toward balance. I've seen reflexology produce noticeable shifts in cycle regularity, cramping, and overall hormonal symptoms, sometimes faster than clients expect. It's a subtle technique, but the results are anything but.

Not every session includes all of these. What I use depends on your body, your cycle timing, your treatment protocol, and what makes sense for you on that particular day. The goal is always to support your body's own processes, not to overwhelm it with interventions.

Who This Is For

This service is designed for women who are:

  • Preparing for IVF or other assisted reproductive treatments

  • Currently in an IVF cycle and managing the physical side effects of hormone stimulation

  • Recovering from egg retrieval or egg freezing

  • Preparing for embryo transfer and want to support implantation

  • Dealing with PCOS, endometriosis, or other conditions that affect fertility

  • Experiencing unexplained infertility and exploring complementary approaches

  • Wanting to support their body between fertility treatment cycles

Not trying to get pregnant? This page is still for you.

You don't have to be on a fertility journey to benefit from this work. If you're dealing with hormonal imbalances, painful periods, irregular cycles, PMS, PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, or ovarian cysts, manual lymphatic drainage and the integrative tools I use can help.

Your lymphatic system plays a direct role in how your body circulates and processes hormones. When lymph flow is sluggish, hormones build up, inflammation increases, and symptoms like painful cramping, heavy periods, bloating, mood swings, and hormonal acne get worse. MLD helps clear that congestion and supports your body's ability to regulate itself.

Many of my clients come in not for fertility specifically, but because they've been told their painful periods are "just normal" and they're looking for something that actually addresses the underlying issue. If that's you, this work is absolutely relevant.

What to Expect

Your first session begins with a conversation. I want to understand where you are in your fertility journey, what treatments you're undergoing, what your body is experiencing, and what your fertility team's timeline looks like. This helps me tailor every session to exactly where you are.

The treatment itself is gentle, full-body manual lymphatic drainage with specific attention to the abdominal and pelvic region (when appropriate for your cycle timing). The pressure is feather-light. Most clients find it deeply relaxing, and many fall asleep.

I build 30 to 35 minutes between every appointment, so there's no rush. You have time to settle in, time to rest after your session, and time to come back to yourself before you leave. Your nervous system needs that space, especially right now.

Timing Matters

The timing of lymphatic drainage relative to your menstrual cycle and treatment protocol matters:

If you're trying to conceive naturally, MLD is best received during the follicular phase (day 1 through 14 of your cycle). Deep abdominal work is avoided during the luteal phase (day 14 through menses) in case of early pregnancy.

If you're in an IVF cycle, sessions can be received throughout your stimulation phase. We'll coordinate with your fertility clinic's timeline, especially around egg retrieval and embryo transfer.

If you're recovering from egg retrieval, MLD can typically begin a few days after the procedure (with your doctor's clearance) and can help significantly with bloating, swelling, and discomfort.

If you're preparing for embryo transfer, sessions in the weeks leading up to transfer can help optimize pelvic circulation and reduce inflammation.

I always recommend discussing lymphatic drainage with your reproductive endocrinologist or fertility specialist before we begin. I'm happy to coordinate with your care team.

The Research

While more research is needed, early studies are encouraging. A 2015 observational study found that women who received massage therapy before embryo transfer during a frozen IVF cycle had significantly higher pregnancy rates compared to those who did not, with some researchers reporting a three to fivefold increase, particularly in women over 40. The researchers proposed that massage promoted relaxation, improved circulation, and created a more favorable environment for implantation.

A separate study on manual physical therapy techniques targeting pelvic adhesions found that 43% of women with prior IVF failure became pregnant after treatment without further IVF cycles.

These are promising findings, but I want to be clear: MLD is a supportive therapy, not a fertility treatment. It works best as part of a comprehensive approach that includes your medical team, your nutrition, your mental health support, and your own body awareness.

Why Firm & Flourish

I'm Morgan Larson, LMT, CMLDT, a certified manual lymphatic drainage therapist with over 12 years of clinical experience and more than 1,000 hours of specialized training. My MLD certification is through the Academy of Lymphatic Studies (ACOLS), trained in the Vodder method, which is the clinical gold standard for lymphatic drainage. My fertility massage and reflexology training is through Claire Marie Miller Seminars, a Massage Hall of Fame program that pioneered the integration of reflexology and reproductive health. I've worked with women at every stage of the fertility journey, from early-stage trying to conceive through IVF cycles, retrievals, transfers, and the emotional aftermath of cycles that didn't work.

My practice is in a private home studio in Kinnelon, NJ (Morris County), surrounded by old-growth forest in the NJ Highlands. There's no waiting room, no back-to-back scheduling, no impersonal clinical setting. When you come here, it's just you, the quiet of the woods, and a practitioner who understands what your body is going through.

I see a limited number of clients per day. Every session is a full 60 or 90 minutes of hands-on treatment, with 35 minutes of buffer built in around your appointment. Nobody is rushed. Your body gets the time and attention it needs.

I've written more about how lymphatic drainage supports fertility at every stage, and if you're weighing your options between complementary therapies, here's how fertility massage compares to acupuncture.
